Walking Your Dog – New Beginnings Dog Training Blog

I am a big believer in walking your dog. Not only is it good for the dog but it is good for us, too.  I observe all the time people on walks with their dogs.  Some I see with regularity others are fair weather walkers. What I do notice is many people allow poor walking habits from their dogs.

Most people walk with their dog’s way out in front of them allowing them to pull them here and there.  The goal for many dogs is to sniff, smell and urinate wherever it is allowed.  Males dogs can urinate repeatedly, they can force out a few drops of urine dozens of times if allowed. These are part of the undomesticated behaviors that dogs still have.

Most people walk with their dog’s way out in front of them allowing them to pull them here and there.

If getting exercise for the dog is the point then keep them walking, a couple of pee breaks while walking is all that is required. Even female dogs will sometimes pee or mark repeatedly though generally less often than males.  Pull your dog in closer to you for more control and keep moving.

I have heard from dog owners that they want their dog to enjoy their walk so they let them go wherever they want.  Your dog can enjoy himself while continuing to move along at a constant pace.  Both you and your dog will get a lot more exercise and your neighbors will appreciate your dog no longer peeing on their mailbox and bushes.
